The city of Naples represents the 4th largest economy metropolis in Italy and the 3rd largest city in the country after Rome and Milan, with a population of 1 million. It is the home of the high-loved worldwide mozzarela and it is the capital of the region of Campania, which comes from “Campania felix” (in latin meaning “fertile countryside”). The name “Napoli” comes from the greek word “Neapolis”... meaning “new city”. Naples’ historic city centre is in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.The city was founded by ancient Greeks in the 2nd century BC. The first pizzeria in the world opened in 1830 in Naples, the Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba. Just within the city of Naples, there are 448 historical churches and 3 main castles: Castel Nuovo (1279), Castel Sant’Elmo (fortress and church) and Castel dell’Ovo (Egg castle). The Funicular in Naples is one of the largest in the world, with over 10 million passengers carried every year.
