The city of Naples represents the 4th largest economy metropolis in Italy and the 3rd largest city in the country after Rome and Milan, with a population of 1 million. It is the home of the high-loved worldwide mozzarela and it is the capital of the region of Campania, which comes from “Campania felix” (in latin meaning “fertile countryside”). The name “Napoli” comes from the greek word “Neapolis”... meaning “new city”. Naples’ historic city centre is in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.The city was founded by ancient Greeks in the 2nd century BC. The first pizzeria in the world opened in 1830 in Naples, the Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba. Just within the city of Naples, there are 448 historical churches and 3 main castles: Castel Nuovo (1279), Castel Sant’Elmo (fortress and church) and Castel dell’Ovo (Egg castle). The Funicular in Naples is one of the largest in the world, with over 10 million passengers carried every year.

Language

The official language in Naples is the Italian, but almost everybody, specially the young people, speaks English quiet good.

The weather in Naples is in general very sunny and pleasant. July is the hottest month of the year (avarage 25º) and January the coldest (avarage 9º). Probably the best months to swim in the beach are June or August, but if you want to visit the city to explore the best pizzerias in the world or the city’s interesting history you can go there at any time.

The currency in Italy is the Euro.

When to go

It is very recommended to go to Naples in the late Spring or in the Summer, so, from May until September (more or less). Naples is wonderful at any moment of the year.

Days

Naples is a big city, and it has a lot of history and endless places to see. We recommend to go at least one week, so you can see a bit of everything, but to see the city well and its surroundings you could spend 2 weeks there and never be bored.

If you want to go to the main shopping street in Naples, Via Toledo, you need to know that most of the shops work from 9h to 13h and from 16h to 20h. Supermarkets are open the whole day, the same than many shopping centres.
