Waimea Canyon is one of the wonders of narure in Kauai, the oldest island in the archipelago of Hawaii. It's been called the «Pacific Grand Canyon», and though it's smaller than the one from colorado it's one of the woldest, most colorful in the world.Waimea River has eroded it's volcanic rocks for thousands of years and has left colored summits and defiles filled with tropical vegetation. The reddish color of the canyon -which taints the water and the mountains- comes from mineral rusting of volcanic rocks, a must see spectacle. If you visit right after the rain season the sight is even more spectacular since the river grows due to the water from nearby mountains, some of the wettest in the world. The best way to visit is to treck around it to discover all its hidden treasures: falls, defiles, mountains and all kind of amazing landscapes.
