The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception (Church Square) was one of the first catholic churches to be built in the Goa area, it dates from 1541. The main reason was that it was the temple of prayer for the Portuguese sailors that passed by the area. One of its main features is that the inside of the temple is relatively plain compared to other churches of the time. Still, it’s colorful and has two large gold altars, one dedicated to Christ Crucified and the other one dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary. Another feature is that the facade is white, a fact that distinguishes the construction from the lush green landscape around it. At present Masses are held in English, Konkani and Portuguese.
