Faro International Airport is usually the starting point of most of visitors coming to Algarve region. Faro is the busiest city in the South of Portugal, also the capital of the province, and it has everything a traveller can need: shops, hotels and a very active night life. Probably the most interesting part of the city is the Old Town or in Portuguese “Cidade Velha”, the oldest part of the city which survived a earthquake in 1755 which demolished almost the whole Faro city. To arrive to the Old Town you have to find the Arco da Vila and there you’ll see several pedestrian streets, with old stone walls, the Cathedral and some palaces. From the Cathedral you’ll have nice panoramic views to the city and it is a good point from where you can admire a sample of the traditional Portuguese tiles. Other interesting points of Faro are: the Praça da Libertade and the Igreja do Carmo, the church which has the Capela dos Ossos built with human bones.
After the cultural visits, you can take advantage and take a walk through the bay and the Faro gardens, full of restaurants and cafés with a wide gastronomic offer.
