Tian'anmen Square is one of the most famous terraces in China and the biggest in the world. It was built after the proclamation of the Peoples Republic of China and has seen most of the country's historical moments such as the 1989 protests where hundreds of protesters were killed. One of its highlights is the Tian'anmen's Gate with Mao Zedong's portrait, which greets the visitors heading towards the forbidden city. Mao Zedong's mausoleum is one of the biggest tourist attractions: there lay the remnants of this political leader, one of the founders of the Chinese Communist Party. There are usually long lines to enter since many Chinese want to make offerings to their former leader.
There are other important buildings in the square such as Qianmen Tower (Beijing's History Museum), The Great People's Palace (government's HQ) or the monument to the People's Heroes, an obelisk in the middle of the square with the names of the communist leaders. You must go through some security controls before entering the square though.
